No Rest for the Wicked…

A reader emailed me a copy for a job vacancy at  of Oceania’s  rest homes,

This advert appeared in a local community newspaper, this week, and offers the following inducement for people to apply; “competitive remuneration“.

I nearly spat my coffee over my monitor and keyboard when I saw that.

Aside from the fact that Oceania has been in a dispute with it’s employees, over demands for a wage increase, the wages paid to rest home workers is hardly flash,

$13.61 an hour?!?!

That’s “competitive”?

Competitive with who – China? Bangla Desh??? Somalia? Someone should tell Oceania’s management that the cartoon below is supposed to be a joke – not an action plan to be implemented,

No wonder the flow of New Zealanders escaping from this country is increasing.

$13.61 an hour.

Disgusting.

    Of course, the delicious irony underlying the constant refrain of ‘Kiwis fleeing across the ditch’ (and I loathe the expression ‘across the ditch’ with a vengeance greater than a Sicilian revenge scenario played out in the Antarctic) must be that while wages are ‘higher’ in Australia, they are that way because Australia is still heavily unionised and that unions are not afraid to exercise their legal rights on behalf of their members.
    Perhaps if we empowered the workers and threw out all union-stifling legislation, NZ would be as ‘competitive’ as Aussie.

    To be fair, “competitive” does not mean “good” or “high”, it just means they pay the same lousy rate as everyone else in the industry.

      Of course, Warren. You’re spot on. Putting “Same lousy rate as everyone else in the country” doesn’t sound quite as appealing… 😉

    Which right wingers then deflect by referring to Australia’s mining industry. As if those in the mining industry don’t have high wages because of their miners’ union?
