Fact Sheet: Employment-Unemployment and Queues for Vacancies

A selection of media reports,  illustrating the very real problem of insufficient jobs for the number of unemployed.

These reports also dispel the myth, used by the Right Wing, and by low-information voters, that people “choose” to be unemployed and do nothing to seek work.

And so it goes (and as far as I can see, probably will for some time to come!) Last year, a WINZ woman told me to ‘lower my sights’ when I had finished 3 months teaching – she had demanded to know why I hadn’t got a permanent job teaching (er, because they don’t exist?)…
“Try rest homes, or McDonalds” she advised unhelpfully. I am too old for McDonalds (they don’t want to hire anyone over about 20) and well, as regards rest homes, they want people with an HCA qualification, which since John Key cut student loans off for people my age, I can’t get..
(Aside from owt else, what fun would it be paying back two student loans, on minimum wage at a rest home?)
Sights lower, permanent job still as far out of reach as ever. I have a ‘fixed term contract’ teaching now (four weeks!) and WINZ is going to hate that, but tough. I’d rather work than not, but that doesn’t fit the public belief!
