The morning of 4 May, and people began to asemble outside Te Papa museum,  to complete the Hikoi to Parliament. On the agenda: opposing National’s planned (part-)privatisation of several state assets. The crowd began to assemble in the morning, with police nearby conferring amongst themselves,

The crowd was as varied and diverse as is New Zealand; Maori, Pakeha, young, old, workers – even the odd ‘suit’,

It was a ‘sea of banners’ – Unions, Maori sovereignty, political parties – and many that were hand-crafted by ordinary folk. The term “rainbow coloured” took on a beautiful sigfnificance,

As well as the issue of asset sales, others showed concerns over environmental issues. (Though one could safelyt argue that selling Bricks & Mortar assets was no different to selling off our environment to corporate interests – both are a legacy our children will have to cope with.)
