Colin Craig – What a silly man you are

Full story

Conservative Party leader, Colin Craig, reckons that sexual gender is a “choice”?

Damn. I must be having a ‘John Banks’ moment –  ‘cos I sure as heck can’t recall ever making any decision to be straight.

Oh dear… can he get any more oblivious? Or more naive? Colin Craig is possibly one of the more stupid politicians out there.
Louisa Wall is SO right. Sexual gender is not a choice. It may be influenced by your surroundings (being closeted for years because you’re in a household like Colin Craig’s) but it’s not at all a choice.

Recently, whenever I hear or read of something Colin Craig has said I find myself thinking “Dude! Just stop talking!” This sort of garbage hurts the head. What’s that saying… “Better to let them think you’re an idiot…”? Sadly, he does represent a section of NZ society.

Personally I think it’s simplistic to say that homosexuality is or isn’t a choice. I didn’t make a conscious choice to be a nerd, or to be an atheist, or to like butter chicken, but those personal attributes are determined by a range of factors which are controllable to varying degrees.

I think your sexual orientation is a bit more fixed in your DNA than deciding whetrher you want Butter Chicken or Tandoori. Aside from the fact I loathe Indian food, it’s like saying you can choose whether to be left or right handed.

Although there is compelling evidence to suggest that there may be genetic and foetal development factors, the makeup of genetic, biological and environmental factors contributing to sexual behaviour is, in my view, highly inconclusive.

The problem that I have with this whole debate is that it is dominated by hysterics on both the liberal and conservative sides of the argument who are completely fixated on their simplistic views that homosexuals either are or are not born that way. It’s a shame that both sides of the debate insist on taking such a narrow minded view of what is a fascinating evolving science.
