Racism, Rape, and Religion

Just when you thought the human race couldn’t possibly be any more insane than it already is, we find two stories. One is from the most technologically advanced, wealthiest nations on planet Earth. The other is from a semi-failed state that is like taking a Tardis trip 1,000 years into the past.

.

Members at the Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church voted Sunday on the resolution, which says the church “does not condone interracial marriage.”

The church member who crafted the resolution, Melvin Thompson, said he is not racist and called the matter an “internal affair.”

“I am not racist. I will tell you that. I am not prejudiced against any race of people, have never in my lifetime spoke evil about a race,” said Thompson, the church’s former pastor who stepped down earlier this year. “That’s what this is being portrayed as, but it is not.”

Melvin Thompson is adamant that  he is not a racist or prejudiced.

Of course not. Basing your beliefs on the colour of one’s skin isn’t racism. We all know that. Racism happens somewhere else.

Personally, I’m happy to dispense with the term “racism” and just use alternative terms. Like, ignorance.

There you go, Mr Thompson; you’re not racist, you’re just plain ignorant. Happy?

And from the other side of the planet, far removed from rural Kentucky, the human capacity for infinity craziness and cruelty carries on,

Karzai’s office said in a statement that the woman and her attacker have agreed to marry. That would reverse an earlier decision by the 19-year-old woman, who had previously refused a judge’s offer of freedom if she agreed to marry the rapist.

Her plight was highlighted in a documentary that the European Union blocked because it feared the women featured in the film would be in danger if it were shown.

More than 5,000 people recently signed a petition urging Karzai to release the woman. She had the man’s child while in prison and raised her daughter behind bars, which is common among women imprisoned in Afghanistan.

A statement released by Karzai’s office says that after hearing from judicial officials, the decision was made to forgive the rest of the sentence she received for having sex out of wedlock, a crime in Afghanistan. The presidential statement did not say when the woman was to be released or how much prison time had been pardoned.

The woman told The Associated Press in an interview last month that she had hoped that attention generated by the EU film might help her get released. With the film blocked, she said that she was losing hope and considering marrying her rapist as a way out. She said her attacker was pressuring her to stop giving interviews.

About half of the 300 to 400 women jailed in Afghanistan are imprisoned for so-called “moral crimes” such as sex outside marriage, or running away from their husbands, according to reports by the United Nations and research organizations. Fleeing husbands isn’t considered a crime in Afghanistan.

Ever wondered what a society ruled by  misogynistic village idiots would look like? Welcome to Afghanistan, circa 2011AD. Or 1011AD. Or 11AD. (Makes no difference, really.)

The only difference  between these two stories is that our American cuzzies have no excuse. They have unfettered access to education and 21st century communications. And when even Presidential candidates indulge in a bit of outrageous racism, is there really that much difference between the two cultures?

It’s amazing the depths of ignorance human beings can plumb, especially when they claim to have a god on their side…

“The only difference between these two stories is that our American cuzzies have no excuse.”

Ummmm… no. What you failed to pick up as the HUGE difference between these two examples is that one involved a tiny little church in the middle of nowhere wheras the other one involved the highest office in the nation and the law of the land.

In the US Religion is largely kept out of the business of Government via the Secular Constitution. In Islamic countries Religion forms a bedrock for the Laws in most of these nations. This is why Islam is a threat to Western Secular values.

“In the US Religion is largely kept out of the business of Government via the Secular Constitution. “

Yeah, right. Hence why the US motto is “In God We Trust”?

“In Islamic countries Religion forms a bedrock for the Laws in most of these nations. This is why Islam is a threat to Western Secular values.”

Really?! Pray tell remind us which countries have been invaded by these naughty Islamic people?

And which countries have been invaded by our courageous American cuzzies?

Tally it all up and get back to us.

Your naive faith in America is… quaint.

“In God We Trust” was only adopted in the 1950’s and was done so for purely symbolic political reasons. It has no impact on the functionings of Government. The US Consitution has been interpreted by a number of Supreme Court rulings as severly restricting Religion in the Public space. You and I might not like it that it seems the majority of Americans are Religious, (and a backward sort of Religion at that), but we can take sollace in that they do not have carte blanche to spread their superstitious nonsense through Government.

As for the countries that were invaded by Islamic people. Well just in a European setting it was Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Albania, Bosnia, Hungary, Romania, and Austria to name just a few. There are far more countries they have invaded in places like North Africa and India. Their Religion calls for them to spread the faith by any means possible.

Are you for real??! That was 500 years ago!!! 😀 😀 😀

Ummmmm…. where did you specify a time limit? The reason they haven’t done anything over the past 100 years ( not 500 as you claim. The Ottoman empire lasted until the end of WWI) is because of the preeminence of the West. Hard to spread your Religion via war when you get your butt kicked everytime. That is not to state there aren’t a number of Muslims who want to do it. One of Al Qaida’s stated aims is to reestablish Muslim rule in places like Spain.

      • 6 December 2011 at 7:54 am

Oh, I dunno… maybe because the issues I’ve raised here are current and not a bloody history lesson?! And because America (as a distinct state-entity) didn’t exist 500 years ago.

        I’ll repeat the questions;

Really?! Pray tell remind us which countries have been invaded by these naughty Islamic people?

And which countries have been invaded by our courageous American cuzzies?

I’ve answered your question. In terms of the pre-eminent power on the planet the US has been very restrained. The number if countries it has actually invaded over the past 50 years is less than 10. Many of these were supported by UN resolutions. This is in stark comparison to say when the UK was the World’s superpower and compares incredibly favourably to the Muslim Arab and Ottoman empires. It is plain that you have little understanding if Islam as you don’t understand the reasons why Karzai intervened in this way. Can you imagine Obama doing something similar in the US?

I think you are mistaking the people who live in the country with the State they live in.
Americans are one of the most Religious people in the Western world it is true. However they have a written constitution guarranteeing Religion cannot play a big part in the public space. That is why they don’t teach Creationism in Public Schools or when they attempt it it gets struck down.

    Spiltting hairs?

Well, you can try, but your belief that “in the US Religion is largely kept out of the business of Government” is probably one of the most laughable statements you’ve ever made. It flies in the face of reality.

By the way having the President say ‘God bless America’ is hardly evidence of a Religious state. It is just wvidence of the people being Religious. I am wanting evidence where tge State is being used to push a Religious agenda such as teaching Religious ideas in public schools.

The answer is not ten. It’s more than that. These are a few that the US has intervened in,

    Vietnam
    Dominican Republic
    Guatemala
    Laos
    Cambodia
    El Salvador
    Nicaragua
    Lebanon
    Grenada
    Bolivia
    Panama
    Iraq
    Somalia
    Haiti
    Zaire
    Liberia
    Afghanistan
    former Yugoslavia
    Colombia

By comparison, you can’t even come up with one instance of an Islamic nation invading another country? Especially a Western nation?

Bollocks on many of those. The US never invaded Nicaragua or Lebanon for a start. Unless you count sending peace keepers as invading somewhere. If so NZ invaded Indonesia and Solomon Islands.

Simply they did not had the opportunity in XX century. They always did it earlier when they could. Even in XX century, do not forget the genocide of Armenians (explicitely taken as model by nazis) or the mass murders of greeks and bulgarians during the balkan wars or… now the persecution against christians in middle east and Africa. (or… slavery, still legal till 1962 in Saudi Arabia. Raids on southern european coasts and ships – including US ships – went on till XIX century to end only after when European power took over northern Africa)

Open your eyes. That usually helps.

I’ve given you examples but you argue it way with nonsensical comments about historical events.

So… you were going to answer how many countries muslims have invaded? And by that, let’s narrow it down to post WW2, shall we? (Parallel Universes aside.)

Ummmmm… I told you the reason Muslim nations haven’t been in a position to invade countries recently (other than say the Arabs attacking Israel in 1948 and 1973). The pre-eminence of the West has meant that any attack has been easily defeated. You just have to look at what happened to Iraq after it invaded Kuweit in 1990 to see this.

The whole point of you raising this question was to try and argue that Islamic militant ideals are not a threat. There was no qualifier to argue that where has Islam been violently aggressive recently (although I would argue Terrorist attacks on Western targets points towards this). Your argument would be like trying to state that Communism wasn’t a threat to Western Democratic values because they never attacked Nato.

You have yet to deal with my claim that Islam is an aggressive militant religion when unconstrained by external influences. Have you ever studied Islam or the Quran Frank? I have. It isn’t a nice book. It makes the old Testament look like a (admittedly rather scary) children’s bedtime story.

They pray for everything and want their crazy creationist shit taught in schools which will really dumb-down there kids. You sometimes say the dumbest things gos really you do.
