Our society sees economic growth as the prime goal of governments and business. Yet economic growth is stalling around the world as we reach the limits of natural resources. Challenges to communities, governments and future ministers of finance who either choose or are forced to run a post-growth economy will be explored by Jeanette Fitzsimons, former Co-leader of the Green Party.

Details: 14 May 2013,  6.30 for 7pm-8pm, Lt 1, Rutherford House, Victoria University of Wellington, 23 Lambton Quay, Wellington.

How can switching off Mercury Energy help?Mercury Energy is the main retail arm of our publicly-owned SOE Mighty River Power which the Government is about to privatise. The current minority National-led Government is putting the company up for sale later this year. Switching away from Mercury to another electricity company will cut the profit of Mighty River Power, and therefore its future share value.Mighty River Power’s share value is driven mainly by the prospect of future profits. Any real threat to profits or share value will make Mighty River a risky investment, even before the share value actually drops. Investors won’t want to buy if there’s a risk the share value will fall instead of rise, as happened with Facebook shares recently. If the Government doesn’t get a high enough sale price, they probably won’t sell Mighty River Power and it will raise serious questions about the ability of the Government to privatise or sell other publicly-owned assets. How will switching off Mercury Energy help you?For a start, did you know that most Electricity Retailers will beat your current provider’s tariff? Yes, whatever you are paying now most other power companies will be cheaper! They will also probably offer you a nice little incentive to join. So changing power companies saves you money! And you know also that it is really easy to change power companies?
You can do it online or over the phone – it takes just 5 minutes. If you don’t know which one to choose, we recommend one of the four other publicly-owned retailers – Genesis Energy, Meridian, Energy Online & Powershop. Privately owned Contact Energy, Empower & TrustPower should be avoided :-) Powerswitch (www.powerswitch.org.nz) is a great website at which you can compare all the different options available to you and you can even organise switching to a new power company straight from the website. Did we mention that it only takes just 5 minutes to switch! And if you are worried, remember that the electricity itself is still the same. In fact the ONLY difference is that your power bill will come from a different name! You will even get your Line Company rebates just as you do now.
