That fits right in with ACT thinking, sadly!
It certainly can’t be any weirder than the method by which Brash took over ACT’s leadership… I’m still fairly stunned by it. In all my years of political activity, I’ve never seen anything quite so bizarre…
When I was in the Alliance in the mid-1990s, I used to joke with my party colleagues that we should auction off some of the places on the Party List, as a fund-raiser. (The Alliance was so lacking in money, we were continually looking for novel ways to raise campaign funds.)
I never thought it might be a semi-serious possibility with a political party. But with ACT, Debbie, I guess practically anything is possible these days…
The thing that struck me at the time of the takeover by Brash was that he wasn’t even a member! How is that even possible? It was good to see Rodders rolled, but at such a cost? Unbelievable.
Totally unbelievable, Debbie… In fact, I don’t think there’s ever been a politrical thriller-novel written, or Hollywood movie produced, with such a plot-device.
I think the public would dismiss it as just too unbelievable…
On a more serious note; what bothers me is if ACT gets into government again, in November. If they are so open to “hostile takeover bids” from outside their Party, then that makes ACT a liability in our political system. Who else is waiting in the shadows to launch their own coup d’etat and seize power?
